Winter Sports Around The Corner

Reporters: Milla and Kiara

As you may know we have some school winter sports coming up in term 2, for year 5 and 6. The sports we will be taking place at Hagley park on Friday afternoons. Trials have already taken place, and the teams will be announced this week and some other teams may be announced next term.

Here is a quote from our sports leader Ms Baker. “Did you know that team stands for Together Everyone Achieves More? And in order to take part you’ll need to work well with your peers.”
Make sure that if you would like to participate in sports teams you'll need to show you can show leadership and work well with your peers.

Also another quote was from another sports leader is Steve and he said “it's all coming together bit by bit.”. Steve has been coaching the soccer team for a number of years.

We can’t wait to see all of our sports players at Hagley!

Food For Thought

Reporter: Atarau

Last week the Koru team did a program called Food for Thought. A lady named Makayla came in from the Heart Foundation and taught us about healthy foods.

Session one: On the first session we had a look at all the different food categories, occasional which is foods that are not that healthy, then there's everyday foods which are healthy foods. In everyday foods there are 4 categories, fruits and veges, dairy products, lean meats and legumes, and breads and cereals.

After we did that we went into groups of four and got given a bag filled with pieces of laminated paper. On the pieces of paper they had either a food or a heading. The heading were everyday the 4 categories of healthy foods and occasional. We had to sort them into the right place.

Session two: The first thing we did on session two was learn how to read labels on food packages to see if they were healthy foods to eat everyday. We did a task to swap our paper and write the box with how much energy and so on.

Session three: Nine people from the Koru team went to the supermarket to do some fun things there. Here is what Breanna said about it - “They had a sheet with different categories. They picked two cereals and breads, and they found the total of fat and the sugars and that stuff. They did that to see if it was occasional or everyday”. She also said that it was very exciting and fun.

I am completely sure that the Koru team had a lot of fun learning about how to eat healthy.

Cultural Festival Today

Reporter: Lucas

This morning our Kapa Haka team has gone to Horncastle Arena to perform for the cultural festival and on the 5th of September our Kapa Haka team performed to our school a little preview of what they will perform at the culture festival.

Here are Charnz's the student leader of the Kapa Haka group's thoughts.

"It was fun to perform to our school and kind of nerve racking. It was exciting and it was also hard to focus sometimes. It's nice to be the leader of the Kapa Haka group because it gives me a lot responsibility and its fun and sometimes cool because people mention you. I am proud to be performing in the culture festival because I like representing my culture and I have done it too times so it will probably will be fun again".

The teacher in charge of Kapa Haka, Miss Gardner, had some insightful comments to make about the group. She said, "Kapa Haka has been going very well. It has been a busy time since we have been preparing for the culture festival. We have a very big group this year and it has been a bit tricky because we don't have a school hall but the beautiful, kind people at the community centre have let us practice there. We are all ready to perform at the big stage at Horncastle tomorrow."

Wishing our performers all the best for a great show today. Kia kaha!

Pitau's Visit To The Art Gallery And Museum

Reporters: Willow and Cecille

Recently the Pītau group got to experience their amazing trip to the Christchurch Art Gallery and Museum. The reason they went was because they were learning about themselves, their belongings and what kiwi identity might be. The Pītau children also looked at some significant New Zealanders, symbols and history.

The children made an art piece and they had to select some images that were significant to them. When they got back to school they put a picture of themselves in their gallery and they had to put important people of New Zealand in there.

Mrs McLeod said, “my overall thoughts on our art gallery trip is that it was very beneficial because it allowed the children to make connections to how they belong to New Zealand.”

We got a quote from a student that went. She had told us about her favourite part and what she saw. Paige says, “we learnt about some pounamu and we went into a paua shell house and learnt about all the history that was in it.”

Beach Education Programme Makes A Splash

Reporters: Lucas and Kordae

In week 2 and 3 all of Pītau and Koru went to South Brighton Beach for Beach Education to learn many things.

They took part in many activities including everything the lifeguards had learned, a sand castle competition and going in the water.

The students were separated into 4 different groups to go around into four stations. On one of the stations they learned what the IRB is and that is an inflatable rescue boat that they use 70% of the time to rescue people.

Next is the medical equipment to help people that are unconscious or are having trouble to breathe. Another one was the inflatable rescue tube which they use 15% of the time to rescue people and finally is the knee boards, which they use another 15% to rescue people.

The sand castle competition that they participated in was a great event with working together very well with great designs with shells, sticks and dried up seaweed.

Finally the water time even though they didn’t have much time  they made the most of it with some huge waves chatting with their friends and having fun.

Mr Cron, who organised the event, said “I thought it was absolutely fantastic, the life guards related really well and children learnt important new safety issues involved with New Zealand beaches”.

Overall this was a great programme. Thanks to the lifeguards who ran it, as well as the teachers and parents for their support.

Year 5 and 6 in Hanmer Springs

In Week 10 of Term 3, Koru 1 and 2 went for a 2 hour bus ride to Hanmer Springs. Once they got there, they lined up to get in. They quickly got undressed and they had already got there togs on underneath there school clothes. It was really fun and everybody had a good time, there was lots of stuff to go on such as: Hydro slides, pools, hot pools, water slides, lazy rivers and so much more. Once we had to leave everybody didn't want to go because it was so fun. Some people didn't want to go because there was a cafeteria there too.

Our key competency focus was Relating to Others. Check out some of our blogs about how we reflected on the day and that key competency.

Check out some of the action.

The Cultural Festival Is Approaching!

Bromley school has been preparing for the Cultural festival 2017. We started at the beginning of the year, writing our own bromley haka, with Jerome Kavanagh, and since then we have been learning our other songs with some sharp actions, singing and more! Our five songs we have learnt are:
Whakarongo mai, Bromley School Haka, Tenei au, Toru mai, and Tena koutou.

We have also found out that the visit to the Cultural festival is on the 17th of August or in other words term 3 week 4 on a Thursday. It will be at the Horncastle arena, in Christchurch. You can purchase tickets from Ticketek.

The helpers includes Tyson, Whaea Jo, Whaea Mata, Whaea Latoua, Sheryl, Ms Baker and more! Yesterday we tried on our uniforms. The girls put on a skirt, a top, and a headband, and the boys wore skirts and belts. All of the kapa haka people are so excited for the Cultural festival.

Watch out for our next WUB episode when we have more on the Cultural festival.
